Veterinary Surgeon
Do you want to work in a ‘World Class to Work For’ practice just 15 miles from the Lake District? Bring your compassion and enthusiasm to our friendly, first opinion practice. You’ll work alongside a team committed to progressive clinical standards, excellent patient care, as well as your wellbeing.
Whether you are looking for a supportive start to your career, seeking the variety of experienced general practice, or ready to pursue a certificate, Ashlea Vets has the balance you’ve been looking for. Most importantly, you’ll find a team that makes you smile and reminds you why you love your job.
What our team says about us:
Last year our whole team rated us as a ‘3 Star World Class to Work For’, which is the highest standard of workplace engagement awarded by Best Companies.
“I remember how intimidating it felt to take that first step as a new graduate… but from the very beginning, the support from my mentor and the entire team at Ashlea Vets made all the difference. I’ve always felt comfortable sharing my worries and asking questions, knowing I would be met with patience, encouragement, and guidance. What has meant the most to me is how supportive the team has been of my personal interests. When I shared my passion for surgery, they genuinely listened and gave me opportunities to grow, allowing me to perform a variety of procedures with the right level of support.” MJ, Veterinary Surgeon
Our practice:
You will join a team of veterinary surgeons who desire to collectively develop and maintain a broad range of medical and surgical skills within our practice. We share our knowledge and skills while ensuring each team member has the space and encouragement to pursue the areas of veterinary medicine or surgery they are most passionate about.
We are a great team in a friendly work place where the kettle is always on and it’s never very long until there’s pizza for lunch. There are regular practice meetings and socials to ensure we communicate well and have fun together.
We have wonderful and loyal clients, many of whom have been with us for multiple generations of animals. We run in-house healthcare plans which can provide both routine (preventative) and non-routine (accident and illness) care for member animals.
Great first-opinion diagnostic aids are available (inc. digital standard & dental x-ray, ultrasound, video-endoscope, in-house laboratory with biochemistry and haematology machines), all of which allow you to investigate your patient’s problems and then guide the owner through the various medical & surgical options.
We are proud to be part of Vet Partners and of our accreditations, which include RCVS General Practice, Gold ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic and Platinum Compassionate Understood.
Our generous CPD budget is just one way we encourage a learning environment. Through quality improvement, team work and listening to one another we ensure we provide and maintain excellent care to our patients and clients. We are a nurse-training practice and are partnered with University of Central Lancaster to provide intra-mural studies to their vet students.
Carlisle is a great city with plenty for all ages. It’s also 15 miles from the Lake District and 8 miles from the Scottish borders with great transport links to major cities such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Manchester.
The role:
Our five vet team is looking for someone who enjoys general practice, and who is committed to learning, developing and working as a team to ensure we provide up to date and excellent contextualised care for our patients & clients.
We’re looking for a compassionate, experienced vet who is a good communicator. You’ll need to be a team player but also able to act on your own judgement and make decisions when required. We will consider full or part time as finding the right person and ensuring there is a work-life balance that suits you is most important.
You would be supported by seven excellent RVNs, who bring their wide range of interests, knowledge and skills to our team while running fantastic nurse clinics and appointments. You would also work alongside our wonderful animal care assistants, student veterinary nurses, front of house colleagues and practice managers. Our standard appointments are 15 minutes with regular, protected breaks & allocated blocks of time for admin work in the diary each day.
The out of hours rota is on a 1:4 basis, allowing a great work-life balance and giving you plenty of time to enjoy the nearby Lake District and Scottish borders. Yes, we do our own OOH work, but being a small practice this is not onerous and if you have to come into the practice it is financially remunerated on top of your salary. We work a set rota with consistent days and duty nights, and a weekend every month, but we are all flexible about swapping if needed.
The package:
Our package helps us ensure we look after you as part of our team:
- Salary between £35,000 and £60,000 FTE including OOH retainer fees.
- 6.6 weeks annual leave including bank holidays
- For any new or recent graduates we are an RCVS VetGDP Approved Practice with an experienced GDP advisor to support you,
